my cat brought in a small bird, what do i do?

well a couple a days ago my cat brought in a little bird, i dont know what kind it is but im thinking it might be a sparrow.
it cant really fly cause my cat pulled feathers out of it.
would it be ok to take care of it until it can fly, then release it.

we have many bird cages and even bird food.

what should i do?

The bird will need to go to a vet that sees injured wildlife or a wildlife rehabber in your area. both free for wildlife. Birds that have been caught by a cat are usually punctured somewhere on the body. If so then will need meds or it will die from infection that is deadly caused by a dangerous bacteria in the cats saliva. If not wounds and you are sure of it. Keep in dim lit room in a small cage with food and water and keep it warm. If there is a wing droop or any thing else that appears wrong bring to vet or rehabber as well. Best chance of it living would be to get to a wildlife rehabber who can get it any treatment it needs and evaluate it and then release when ready into wild again. I would also put a bell on your cats collar to warn wildlife or its presence.

well is it eating? drinking? if it is most likely it will live..if its not the it might die…..hand feeding is hard after the bird is 2 weeks becuase it doesnt know what you are tring to do ….so thats kinda not an option……if you can try to get it to an animal rescue center…or the vet

just hold on to the bird until its able to take care of itself. cause if you let him go now then he might die or something cause it can’t fly.

You should try to find a licensed wild life rehabber. If you call your local humane society, or a vet they should have a number for you. The rehabber has the facilities to take care of the bird. It is illegal for you to have it, according to the Federal Migratory Bird Act. Unfortunately if the cat broke the birds skin, which it almost certainly did, massive infection is unavoidable and the bird will most likely die.

I would very strongly encourage you to keep your cat indoors. Millions of song birds are killed by cats each year. Also, your cat will have a MUCH longer healthier life. I have a cat that I love very much. She is very happy to be indoors.
