Would a parrot cage be too big for a budgie?

I have the chance of obtaining a parrot cage. A friend saw it advertised for £15. I have a medium sized budgie cage, and I had mentioned I would like a larger cage.

I know the perches would be too thick but I could adapt it, and he would have plenty of room to have all his toys in and fly around. I do let him out the cage all the time but just like him to have as much freedom and space as possible, even inside the cage.

Go for it. We NEVER had our birds in small cages. The perches will be easy to change and budgie will be thankful for the room.

as long as the spacing between bars is small enough you should be fine

That depends entirely on the bar spacing. It’s actually good for any bird to have a variety of perch widths; it helps them exercise their foot muscles. But you have to check the bar spacing.

There’s no such thing as "too big" when you’re talking space for your bird :) Your new parrot cage should be great for your budgie as long as the bar spacing is small enough that they cannot get out.

    Hi,

The problem with most parrot cages is, the bars are to wide for them to keep budgies in. If the bars are less than ½" wide, that’ll be fine, any more and there is a possability your bird could get it’s head stuck.

The larger the better, make sure the budgie can’t escape through the bars.

Most parrot cages bar’s would be too large/thick in diameter for the ting feet of a Budgie to grasp safely.
Also the cage bar spacing might be too large/wide, allowing this birds head to possible get caught between the cage bar’s.

I would suggest you buy a nice larger sized cage made for a Budgie. Will also have size appropriate sized food dishes too. They aren’t expensive.

Or you could buy a used cage and clean it well with bleach water, rinse real well and dry.

When I had budgies, they had a large Cockitiel cage, and they did just fine in it, in fact they loved it.

If they cant get out, or stuck in the bars, I say go for it…space is always good for a bird.

Just make sure the spacing of the bars isn’t too big for your budgie. They can either escape or get their heads caught between the bars. Space wise, they love the bigger space of what a bigger cage offers.

You can never really have a cage that’s too big. Go for it if you think it will work for you.
