Sunday, March 7th, 2010

PLEASE FORWARD TO EVERYONE TO PROMOTE RESCUE, DON’T BREED OR BUY! Thanks to Kris & Kenny for rescuing an extremely bald and neglected macaw to become full feathered LOVELINESS! Kris is cockatoo Geronimo’s bird sitter. She promotes RESCUE, DON’T BREED OR BUY, as I (birdlady423) agree. Kris also explains important facts about bird ownership and care. PLEASE RESEARCH PROS & CONS OF PET OWNERSHIP BEFORE RESCUING ONE! THANKS!
With prayers and blessings,
Linda Kershaw(owner of Geronimo) & Kris Carpenter (owner of macaw Betty, Goliath, & Boston)

Advice needed – refurbishing a parrot cage?

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

I’ve acquired a largish parrot cage on a stand which has sadly been left outside and the chrome bars are quite rusty. I’m thinking of having it sandblasted as sandpapering will be just too time consuming.

Which types of metal paint would be suitable for painting the bars afterwards? I don’t want to poison whatever bird we eventually buy but I’m assuming people do renovate old parrot cages successfully, they are so expensive to buy new.

Any advice or website links would be great. I live in Ireland so UK/Ireland links rather than other countries would be best. Thanks

Preparation

* Use a wire brush to remove any loose finishing
* Sand all the metal by hand

The paint you choose

* Should not contain lead, zinc or chromate
* Is "high adhesion", formulated to bond with the metal surface
* Is hard-wearing
* Is fast drying

Many brands will have a picture of a baby crib or a mother holding a child – look for indicators such as these

Before you paint

* Remove the bird(s) to a different room
* The room you paint in should be well-ventilated
* Thin coats are best
* Use a backdrop like a large sheet of cardboard behind the cage to catch excess paint

When your done

* Wait at least a week
* Don’t cover a freshly painted cage with the bird in it

If your bird seems to be wearing out the paint on the bird cage

* Make sure there are lots of interesting perches to climb on
* Every parrot cage (for hookbill birds) should have at least 3 textures of bird perches – soft wood, hardwood & rope (or fabric)

Does anyone know where to get the coating that goes on parrot cages that is safe and non-toxic for animals?

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

I have a parrot cage that has a bit of rust on the bottom part, the legs and slide out tray. I don’t wanna throw it out just cause I was careless in storing it. I sanded the area with the rust and it looks ok and it still strong and what not after all it is wrought iron but I just wanna coat it so it looks a little better and it isn’t exposed if my bird is out hopping on the floor near the area. The cage is black vein in color but I’d be willing to change the color of just that bottom part if I had to.

Earth easy has more information
I did read that any non-toxic latex based paint is safe for use on bird cages, but I would check against Eartheasy specifications

Lovebird Cage Set-Up for 2 Lovebirds

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

This is how we set-up our cages for two lovebirds!! We forgot to mention the rope perch attached to the front top of the cage with a bird candy! Sierra is looking a bit rough as she is going through a molt!

This set-up can work for one lovebird too!

Peruvian Guinea Pig , Turtles, Syrian Teddybear Hamster, Lionhead Bunny Cage Updates

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Another request: Here is a small tour of just one room where some of my critters reside.

I revised Queen Phoebe & Princess Nyah’s guinea pig cage. They were getting very lazy so I added a second story. They used to have a second story and loved it. I dont know why I went back to a one story. This time they will have to go upstairs to eat their hay, food & treats. Their sleeping quarters and potty is downstairs. As soon as it was done,they scurried up and checked it all out, found their hay, food and treats, and had their fill.

I had to put my 3 yellow bellied slider turtles in a 20 gallon long tank, as they were the smallest and the 2 larger ones in the 50 gallon. Tucker, the biggest was caught trying to eat Meenie’s head – so I had to get Meenie outta there.

Then there is Toby’s cage, new Syrian Teddybear hamster’s double cage. I put 2 ‘My first home’ hamster cages together and made a 3 story cage for him. He loves it, of course. 2 Ramps, spinner wheel, 2 food bowls, sleeping hut, potty.

Then, not much about Kasper, the lionhead bunny, except, he lost out on his hammock – as that went to the guinea pigs to use as a step up to their 2nd story. Kasper only uses his indoor pen to sleep in, because he loves the patio all day and has another cage out there. What a life.

The video would have been too long to show the huge cockatiel cage, Keiko’s (quaker parrot) cage & playstand. But that was pretty much covered in my other vids.

ONE LAST NOTE,, FOR ALL YOU SMALL CRITTER LOVER, THE BEST THING TO USE FOR CLEAN UP IS WHITE VINEGAR MIXED WITH WATER. Put that in a spray bottle. That cleans up any urine and poop and will not harm you little ones.

How do I put my parrot cage bumpers?

Monday, February 15th, 2010

How do I put the 4 pieces you get when you buy a bird cage so the bird doesn’t make a mess?
Type in Google parrot cage in images, and look at one of the pictures at the bottom.
The slanted part.

So it doesn’t make a mess? LOL

I’d make sure that your bird isn’t inside first. Have a temporary cage to put everything into while you put them on.
