Does anyone know of a chew-proof cover for a parrot cage?

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Our conure likes to chew holes in his fabric covers which kind of defeats the purpose of the cover! And makes quite a lot of mess! Is there anything that works best?

Yea everyone is right. You’re just going to have to find something less expensive that you can replace more easily…it’s hard to find something more durable than what’s normally at the pet store. My macaw drags his cover into his cage a little big at the time…when we get up, about 25% of the cover is INSIDE the cage. lol

Parrot stuff again more urgent questions?

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Hi again. Thanks to everyone who answered my question…I have more now. I am looking to buy her a proper parrot cage, but I am not sure what size to get. I know they need to be tall so she can climb, should I make her a gym? I have seen them and they are expensive…I can make one for cheap!!! Also I have a cat..she dosnt seem to mind her at the moment. I dont leave them alone together for obvious reasons, but can I train my cat to like her and leave her alone? Also I am after a fact sheet type thingy on parrots, but my google searches have come back with nothing usefull can anyone help me with this? Also I have been told you can put wood chips in the bottom of the cage, what kind should I use? I dont want to kill her with poison. Can anyone also provide me with any extra informaiton that could be useful. I dont know much about these birds and would like to everything I can to best care for her.

I would recommend a cage that has bars across the bottom with a tray underneath. That way you can line the with anything from news paper to woodchips, just make sure to clean it often. I always used newpaper for my parakeets. As for the cat how does it act toward the bird? My two birds ride around on my cats back, they seem to enjoy it and I think the cat likes the way thier feet scratch her back.

I have a parrot cage that is starting to rust, can it be refinished somehow?

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Or does it need to be re powdercoated?

To powder coat a cage would be very expensive for a one off job.
If you paint it with any paint the parrot will eventually chew on the bars and chip it so injesting the paint which could do it harm. You would need to leave the cage for up to a week to make sure that all the fumes had disapated from the paint. you also have to make sure that it is the safe sort of paint for animals contact.
Where would you keep your parrot while the cage was drying?
It would probably be cheaper to buy a brand new cage.
There are some very good ones and reasonable prices available.

HELP, my parrot is attracting fruit flies what should i do?

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

HELPP…My parrot cage is in the kitchen, her apple and food is attracting fruit flies, they are flies all over the house and are landing on food. Does anybody have any tips of geting rid of them?

Keep the area clean. Take up any uneaten fruits and vegetables within 4 hours. OR if they are given in the morning… take them up as soon as you get home from work/school. the only answer is cleanliness.
