My parents do not like birds in cages, please help me convince them that it is ok?

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

I really want a bird and am totally obsessed with them. I told them I will pay for everything but they said they don’t like birds in cages. I know how they feel but they don’t know how I do

Cages are simply like ‘bedrooms’ for birds! Once you build a bond with your bird and they trust you, you can let them fly around your house! I used to have parakeets and I’d let them out of their cage every day. They loved sitting on the couch with me and playing with me while I watched TV. One of my parakeets liked taking showers with me!! He’d love to splash around in the water on the bottom of the shower. They also loved playing on my desk when I was doing homework. Once you trust your birds you can let them fly around your house! You can even teach them to fly to you when you call.

Of course your parents wouldn’t like the idea of keeping you in a house all the time. That’s why they trust you and let you out to hang out with your friends and such right? Same thing for birds. Cages are just kinda like houses. A place they go to eat, sleep, poop, and just hang out. But when you let them out, that’s when they get to play and have fun with you!

How can I make caged birds’ life prettier?

Friday, March 26th, 2010

At work, they have several bird cages with parrots. It is cruel enough that they are locked up in there (God, I feel like opening the door for them), what can i do to make them feel better? Are there any toys or plants hat birds would like in their life prison?

(psst.. if you open the door for them they will probably die of starvation if they aren’t killed first)

Parrots are intelligent animals that need their minds to be constantly stimulated. Wow… if they don’t even have any toys in there then yes that is cruel. I hope their cages are large at least.

SOCIAL INTERATION
First of all, parrots need to be taken out of their cages every single day for at least a few hours to have social interaction with their owners. The way you describe it, somehow I doubt that is happening.
So instead, these parrots -need- to have a cage mate of the same species that they can interact with.. and the cage needs to be large enough to easily house them.

FORAGING
What are the parrots being fed? I varied diet will certainly make their lives more interesting (plus if they are being fed nothing but seed, that is really bad for them).
Provide them with vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, and such. You may also provide fruits, dandelion leaves, grass, pasta, etc.
Plus there is something called captive foraging for pet parrots. This is extremily good for their mental being and will keep them busy for hours. It involves hiding food around their cages or there are many foraging toys out there that make them have to work to get at the food.
Here’s a good website about captive foraging:

http://community.livejournal.com/captiveforaging

TOYS
Parrots need lots and lots of toys. There are 11 categories of toys, it is a good idea to have toys from at least 2 or 3 of them: cuddling toys, noisy toys, puzzles, destructible toys, non-destructible toys, food finders, preeners, pushing/pulling toys, moving/shaking toys, foot toys, and the toy chest

PLANTS
The parrots will probably appreciate plants… they can use them to hide behind and also chew on (note that they will probably destroy the plant).
Here’s a list of safe and unsafe plants for birds: http://www.plannedparrothood.com/plants.html

Also, if the parrots are using normal wooden perches, try to replace them with natural branches – the parrots like to chew on them and they are much better for their feet.

I hope that helps and good luck!

Can birds live in these cages?

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

I really like these bird cages, they are beautiful! but i’m wondering if it’s actually suitable for a little birdy to live in.

http://www.onlineoriental.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=1&Product_Code=gz203&Category_Code=cag

also, i was thinking of a small bird like a lovebird or parrotlet; not a parrot.

1- YOU could not put a parrot in there as yes it will chew through, and it will be bored and pluck its feathers out, also it could become depressed and learn bad habits. eg biting, really hard, chewing, squawking, if a bird is unhappy it could turn to these habits.

2- a budgie or small parrot could also chew this cage, and it could also, by the looks of it, fit through the holes in the cage and escape. If you were to get say an indian ring neck parrot or something to put in this cage you would have to just use it as a sleeping cage and have an open perch or big aviary for your bird during the day. Parrots need activities, as with any other birds. Agreeing also with the person above the lacquer would probably kill the birds.
yes that cage is gorgeous though.
