What color is the best for this bird cage for a green parrotlet? ?

February 4th, 2010

I am finally ordering a new cage for my bird, petey. He is a male parrotlet. What color cage should would look good in any color room?
What cage would it be the easiest to view him through the bars of?
This is the cage:
http://www.birdcages.com/medium-bird-cages/with-dometop/roswellvictorianbirdcage.cfm#ReviewHeader

you should definitely get the white cage because i also have a parrotlet that is in a cage very similar to that one in white, and because it is a white color you will be able to see the bird better as oposed to any of the other colore { except for platinum}.
pros of a white cage include: better view, easy color to work with, cleaner looking cage, brightenes up a room…many other positives but a negative is that you will see dirt and poop easier but it does seem like you tke excelent care of your bird so i would say that you will have no problems with that white cage.
good luck with your cage and i hope your parottlet lives a long happy life.

Largest bird cages for the least amount of money?

February 4th, 2010

I am going to be getting a quaker parrot in a couple months. I want the cheapest cage I can find that is over 18×18. I’m looking for a cage that is around 32×24. Where can I find huge cages for cheap??

There are lots of cage suppliers in the uk. Get the largest cage you can for the money you have…that’s whats best for the bird. Larger the better..you’ll have a very happy bird then! If you go 2nd hand DONT get one with any rust on. Its fatal to any birds.
Ebay sometimes have them NEW thru different sellers under Pet Supplies. Same with Amazon also.

Parrot Society maybe able to give help…(see note below) Their number is 01442 872245 http://www.theparrotsocietyuk.org
Its worth joining the parrot society though, becasue also in their monthly mags there are for sale and wanted ads; you may find a parrot in there, rather than going thru the pet shop trade.

(I cannot understand even the likes of the Parrot Society to be honest, saying that for instance a Conga Grey only needs a cage that is 24" cube… Ridiculous in my eyes.Im afraid. My CAG grey has a cage thats big enough for three macaws, and he is out most of the time too and has the complete run of the whole house – - THIS equals one happy bird.)
Please try and do right by yours…
Good luck with him/her

Have you seen http://www.fluffies.org Mine is in there under the username of PARROTPOTTY Or Just google "Eastbourne seafront parrot trolley" Thats another way into the pages. Lots in there..You can make pages for FREE and find out all sorts of different things parrot!
Give it a try…

Where can I buy a mess catcher for parrot cages seperatley thats atleast size 24×24?

Check online with Dr. Fosters and Smith (www.drsfostersmith.com ) or any other retailer. Until then, be resourceful and use a shower curtain / old sheet and wrap it around the birds cage to keep the seed / food from falling all over the floor.

Isn’t it inhumane to keep birds in cages all the time?

February 4th, 2010

They should be able to move their wings. I feel so bad for birds that have to stay in cages all the time without being let out. Just an observation…I don’t want to hear any nasty comments thank you.

I agree that birds need to have some freedom in the house, but it is not inhumane for domesticated birds to be housed in a cage, they accept the cage as their home.

But to try to place a Wild Bird in a cage then that is inhumane since they were born in the wild and do not understand being confined, a Wild Bird will try to escape by beating its self against the bars of the cage. They will refuse to eat or drink, and if they are not released they will die. You will not see that kind of behavior with a Domesticated Bird. When I am not at work I will open my parrots cages so they can climb out and walk around, they have their flight feathers clipped so they are not flying and when they choose to return to their cages they will. I will not allow them freedon in the house when I am not home. They are much safer in their cages and have their toys to play with.

As a bird owner you need to supervise what they are doing at all times while they are out. You need to think about it this way, birds that can fly around in the house face many dangers that the owner doesnt realize. Such as:
1.ceilings
2 ceiling fans
3.open doors
4.open windows
5.falling into the toilet
6.falling into a pot of cooking food
7.Landing into a sink of water
8. flying into windows

And that is just some of the dangers they face being free in the house.

I am on a 24/7 call for Emergency care for injured birds that’s owners felt their bird should have the freedom to fly in the house. I have seen so many tragic injuries to birds, such as:

Case #1 A young Parakeet was allowed to fly in his owners house and slammed into a burning candle, he has wax all over his feathers and feet.

Case #2 A young African Gray flew though his home slammed into a window, busting open his chest, he required 3 stitches, and the Vet charge his owns over $300 dollars in medical care.

Case #3 A Lovebird was flying into the kitchen and landed in a pot of boiling stew. Bird survived but had sever burns to his feet, and became crippled and was never able to walk again.

Case #4 A White Dove was allowed to fly in his home because his owner felt it was cruel to keep his wings clipped. The Dove was perched on top of a door, the door was slammed shut by their kids. The Dove was slammed in the door resulting in a broken neck, death was instant.

Now I am not trying to be smart, or nasty. I am stating facts about the safety of birds being in or out of their cages. The cases I mentioned are only a few of so many I have had to deal with. When a bird that has been injured is brought to me, I have to stablize it and get it ready to be transported to a Vet. Some injuries I have seen were so severe that even the Vet can’t help and the pet bird dies.

Many times I have heard the owners say they didnt think the bird could be injured if they were allowed to have freedom in the house, and they wished they had know it. Now they are minus a pet bird and they are harbored with guilt over it’s death.

The point I am tying to make is maybe it isnt as inhumane to have a Pet Bird in a cage as you think it is. As opposed to allowing it the freedom to strech their wings fly around the house to only meet their fate.

Would a parrot cage be too big for a budgie?

February 4th, 2010

I have the chance of obtaining a parrot cage. A friend saw it advertised for £15. I have a medium sized budgie cage, and I had mentioned I would like a larger cage.

I know the perches would be too thick but I could adapt it, and he would have plenty of room to have all his toys in and fly around. I do let him out the cage all the time but just like him to have as much freedom and space as possible, even inside the cage.

Go for it. We NEVER had our birds in small cages. The perches will be easy to change and budgie will be thankful for the room.

Will my English budgie be all right?

I caught her breaking off pieces of paint from a decorative bird cage and eating it. She seems to be alright. Does any one know if the paint could be toxic?

it shouldnt be. my Quaker does that all the time. I dont think they would use toxic paint on a bird cage.

What is the initial cost of buying a small bird?

February 4th, 2010

I’ve been doing a lot of research and have decided that a cockatiel is the right bird for me. What is the initial cost of the bird/cage/toys/food, etc?

Usually I would say a little under $300, which is around the initial cost, but really I have no idea. Because I don’t live around your area. The best way to determine what the cost is, is by actually going into pets stores or online stores and see how much the cost of the toys, cages, food and bird is. Than add on the taxes so you can have a better estimate ( or exact) cost.
here are some sites that you might want to look at to determine.

You could also go look at second hand stores for bird cages if you don’t like the pricing. Just remember to clean the cage thoroughly so it doesn’t harm your bird from existing mites and other stuff.

I would strongly advise you though to just go to the pet stores and see for yourself. They could be having discounts and Special sells around now. I know mine do.

Parrot Play Gyms Stands Cage Swings Bird Gym toys hanging toy cages toys

Top Quality Parrot Gymnasiums at ” Affordable ” prices!

The Last Parrot Gym your bird will ever need!
Your parrot gym will be individually hand-crafted and species specifically designed and computer balanced for your particular species (type) of parrot/s.
Made to simulate the twisted vines and branches of the trees found in your parrot’s natural habitat, precisely ridged multidimensional footholds are circumfused and grafted into the base of the tree-top. The branches provide a slight and gentle bounce, and the multidimensional footholds will provide your parrot/s with optimal foot comfort and exercise. The grafted branches are ‘orthopedically designed and precisely ridged’ to ensure an easy grasp, as is shown in the video footage.
No more having your feathered friends standing on damp wooden perches!
Again, the perches on the Rhodesian Elm Tree are not made of natural wood… such as manzanita, which can be quite slippery… java trees, bottlebrush, or grapevine. The wood-grain appearence is created via the three stage molecular process, without the use of any dye, stains, or chemicals, and all materials used are 100% non-toxic.
The branches have been ‘hand-grafted’ into irregularly shaped limbs in order to stimulate the muscles in your parrots’ feet, thereby preventing leg cramping and foot sores, which is a common ailment in captive parrots.
